Landlord restrictions send pets packing

According to Confused.com, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is urging landlords to soften their stance on keeping pets, because many people are sadly being left with no option other than to part with animals.

The number of people who own their own home is at a 20-year low, meaning that an unusually large number are choosing to rent, and as a result Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has reported that 141 animals have been taken there in 2011 so far, when 236 arrived throughout the whole of 2010.

Head of Intake for Battersea, Liz McWalter, said: “Seeking our help is the responsible thing to do and we will always aim to do all we can. Owners should never resort to dumping or abandoning their pet."

Many landlords will not even allow fish or hamsters, and if you do have a pet then it’s best to confirm the exact contract details before you go ahead.  You may also be able to negotiate with the landlord, and having pet insurance in place may help sway the decision in your favour.
