Motorists could save a cumulative total of some £8 billion each year by driving more efficiently, it has been claimed.

Research conducted by car insurance provider swiftcover.com has shown that fuel has become the third largest monthly expense for UK families.

And therefore consumers should look to make a number of savings on fuel costs by being more efficient in their driving, the company claims.

"Everyone is worried about the cost of living and with petrol prices predicted to soar to 150p a litre by the end of this year, now is the time to change your driving habits," said spokesperson for the firm Tina Shortle.

She added that eco-driving is becoming increasingly important and that by taking a number of steps drivers could ensure their fuel costs were kept to a minimum.

Doing things such as ensuring tyres are at the correct pressure and removing excess weight from the car to lighten the load can help to improve fuel efficiency, the car insurance firm noted.

Earlier this month, the firm found that many British drivers are confused about what is and is not covered by their car insurance policy.
