Owners of pets should remember that an animal's welfare is more important that lavishing it with presents, an expert has warned.
Opting to take out pet insurance to ensure that an animal's health bills are covered should be higher on a list of priorities than buying gifts and treats, pet owners should remember.
A spokesperson for esure pet insurance, Asia Manzoor, said that often pets remain uninsured, even though they are often treated as members of the family.
"Owners should bear in mind that, ultimately, their pet's health is more important than the latest dog accessories or expensive treats," said Ms Manzoor.
She added that the current lifestyle trend is for owners to treat their animals as members of the family and this is being seen through the amount of money being spent on the pets.
Recent research from Sainsbury's Finance revealed that more than 5.5 million pet owners believe they do not need to take out pet insurance for their cat or dog.
