Tagging animals 'a sensible precaution'

Tagging family pets with microchips is a sensible way to protect against loss or theft, a pet insurance expert has argued.
Mark Effenberg, chief executive of Healthy Pets Insurance, claimed that the popularity of microchipping pets is increasing and that taking such a move can lead to animals coming home in a short period of time if they do go missing.
"People are microchipping an awful lot more ... [they] are generally becoming more aware of the danger of theft and we are finding that people are looking to insure against it," said Mr Effenberg.
He noted that taking such a move was a "responsible" thing to do, as if animals do get lost or stolen, it is easy to search for a microchip, meaning that pets can be given back to their owners in a short amount of time.
Statistics from the Missing Pets Bureau indicate that some 2,500 dogs and 3,200 cats go missing each week.
