UK to relax pet quarantine rules

From January 1st 2012, quarantine law will be relaxed to bring the UK in line with the rest of Europe.

current law states that any dog coming in to the UK must be vaccinated against, and blood tested for rabies, followed by 6 months in quarantine.

The law, which is designed to combat the spread of rabies was put in place over 100 years ago.

In 2012, there will be no need for blood tests and quarantine will be reduced from 6 months to just 3 weeks.  Currently pets must be treated for Ticks and tapeworm and this is also going to be relaxed bringing the UK in line with European legislation.

Britain is currently free of rabies and reported cases are very rare, but the Dogs Trust and RSCPA think these changes could jeopardise this, but the government insists there is no risk and that the changes will make the process easier for both pet and owners.
